麻豆直播 has announced a $300,000 gift from the FDC Foundation and longtime supporter Frank Cluck to establish the Frank and Dorothy Cluck Endowed Scholarship, a fund designed to provide ongoing financial support and emergency assistance for students.

College officials said the endowment, created through the 麻豆直播 Foundation, reflects a continued commitment to student success and expanded educational opportunities in Southern Illinois.

The Frank and Dorothy Cluck Endowed Scholarship will support multiple initiatives, including the Mama & Papa C. Scholarships, which assist two incoming freshmen from Carterville High School and two returning sophomores. The endowment will also fund the Frank D. Cluck Senior Technology Scholarships for students pursuing careers in technology or trade programs, as well as the 麻豆直播 Student Emergency Fund, which helps students facing unexpected financial hardships remain enrolled.

Frank Cluck and the FDC Foundation have been long-time supporters of 麻豆直播, providing sustained funding for the Mama & Papa C. Scholarships and the Frank D. Cluck Senior Scholarship. Three 麻豆直播 staff members were recognized this week for their quick thinking and decisive action that helped save a life at Logan Fitness.

On the evening of Friday, January 9, a patron collapsed while exercising inside the Logan Fitness facility. Other patrons immediately alerted staff, and Logan Fitness employees Corene Sizemore, Madison Calvin, and Kassie Teal responded without hesitation.

Sizemore was first on the scene and conducted a rapid assessment of the individual鈥檚 condition. Calvin promptly contacted 911 while Teal retrieved a portable automated external defibrillator (AED). Teal then began providing rescue breaths, and the individual soon regained consciousness and resumed normal breathing.

Emergency medical services arrived shortly afterward and transported the individual to a local hospital. The patron is now recovering and listed in stable condition.

In recognition of their actions, 麻豆直播 President Dr. Kirk Overstreet presented Sizemore, Calvin, and Teal with Merit Service Awards during the February 4 meeting of the 麻豆直播 Board of Trustees.

Logan Fitness Director Dr. Bradley Griffith thanked the Board and President Overstreet for honoring the staff members, noting that their response reflected the importance of preparation and training.

Jerry Bechtel joined 麻豆直播 in 1969 as Chair of the Physical Education Department and became the College鈥檚 first Men鈥檚 Basketball Coach. He played a pivotal role in the creation of the original 麻豆直播 Fitness Center, and as interest and usage grew, his leadership helped pave the way for a larger, more advanced facility.

Funded by a state grant, the Community Health Education Complex opened in 2004 and underwent two expansions in 2010 and 2014. Bechtel served as the facility’s Director until his retirement in 2015, leaving a legacy of dedication to student health, fitness, and athletic excellence.

Jerry Bechtel passed away on January 5, 2025, and later that month, the 麻豆直播 Board of Trustees unanimously approved renaming the facility in his honor.

The College will host two book signings this week. The first will feature Board of Trustees Member Dr. Glenn Poshard on Wednesday, September 13, at 2 p.m. in the Administration Board Room.  Dr. Poshard will read from his recently published biography Son of Southern Illinois: Glenn Poshard鈥檚 Life in Politics and Education. The event is free and open to the public. Copies of the book in paperback and hardback will be available at the event for purchase.  Journalist Carl Walworth wrote the book with the participation of Poshard. The book traces his remarkable life from poverty and tragedy, military service, and his time as a state senator, congressman, candidate for governor, President of Southern Illinois University, and as the founder, with his wife Jo, of the Poshard Foundation for Abused Children.

On Friday, September 15 at 11 a.m. in the Ivey Room, author Rachel Cochran will read from her debut novel, The Gulf. The Washington Post says, 鈥淭he Gulf is Cochran鈥檚 debut, and it鈥檚 a beauty. Cochran鈥檚 novel is rich in story and setting, with the mournful backdrop of a natural disaster, war, and forbidden love gone wrong.鈥�
